Inflammation is characterized by discrete granulomas centered on cores of cellular and mineralized debris surrounded by several concentric layers of mature fibrous connective tissue with many lymphocytes. Granulomatous inflammation contains many large epithelioid macrophages, fewer multinucleated giant cells and variable numbers of other inflammatory cells. (see Fig. 16.17)
